Student Life in Olomouc and the Czech Republic

Olomouc sits in the gently rolling, fertile basin of the Morava River, in central Moravia, which forms the eastern Czech Republic. Near Olomouc lie the Jeseniky Mountains, which boast good quality skiing, hiking and camping. The climate is quite mild, averaging 18 degrees Celsius in summer and 0 in winter.

Many students may be unfamiliar with the Czech Republic, its amenities and life style. They will soon discover that the home of Palacky University, Olomouc, provides the amenities found in other Western cities of similar size. The approximately 100,000 inhabitants of Olomouc reside in the cultural, business, and religious center of its region. Those items and services that cannot be found here can be obtained in Brno, Prague or Vienna, all of which are located within the distance of a three-hour train journey.

The cost of living in Olomouc is much lower than in other Western cities. Prices for individual goods and services vary, but on the whole the cost of living in 2004 was about one third that of a similarly sized city in the United States. It is recommended that students budget approximately
$3500 (USA) for living expenses for the academic year (ten months). This estimate does not include the price of books and other educational materials.

Public transportation throughout the Czech Republic is very highly developed and quite inexpensive. It may be easily utilized to take in the incredible wealth of history, architecture, and beautiful landscapes of the Czech nation. Public transportation (tram, bus, and train) in Olomouc is quite sufficient to meet student's needs.

    Student Housing and Facilities

The University provides accommodation in the University halls of residence, mostly in double rooms ($130/month). All resident buildings contain recreation areas, TV and study rooms and cooking facilities. Lunch or dinner in the student cafeteria cost about $2.50. In Olomouc it is easy to rent a flat (two rooms and a kitchen) for about $400/month.

    University Information Resources

University students have access to books, serials, and periodicals in the State Deposit Library. The University Library has recently been reconstructed, and the Faculty has its own information center, well stocked with hundreds of foreign journals. Departments also make their own collections available for the students. The library holds an up-to-date collection of videos, slides, CDROMs with special relevance to medical and related areas. Over 250 student personal computers, linked in a network, give full access to e-mail, the Internet and the following medical databases: Ovid Medline, EBSCO Host, Proquest Medical Library, Science Direct, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science.

    Sports Facilities

Students at the English Program have fitness and training centers available to them. They may also become members of university teams and make use of other university facilities, especially those at the Faculty of Physical Culture. It should be noted that athletics play an important part in student life at Palacky University. The Faculty of Physical Culture boasts extensive opportunities for recreation and competitive sports.

The University owns a large sports hall, which is available for use by all students. Students may also use municipal sports facilities, e.g. a fifty-meter swimming pool and two ice skating rinks. An excellent ski resort is located less than one hour's driving distance north of Olomouc. Olomouc also offers good opportunities for those who enjoy watching competitions. Local teams play in first league ice hockey, basketball, and football (soccer).

    Cultural Life

For a town of its size, the opportunities for social and cultural activities in Olomouc are extraordinarily rich. The city's architecture is generally acclaimed to be second only to Prague's. As the former capital of Moravia, Olomouc claims a rich cultural environment. Olomouc hosts the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Moravian Theater, (which hosts plays, ballet, and operas), the Art Museum, and the Regional Museum. Four cinemas, several local FM radio stations, and two town newspapers serve the region. For further activities and cultural exploration, Prague, Vienna, and Krakow lie within relatively easy striking distance.

    Student Health Insurance

Students should provide health insurance for themselves for the duration of their stay in the Czech Republic. Many students find coverage in their home countries, while other students find it feasible to insure them through the Czech health insurance system. In either case, appropriate proof of coverage should be given to the proper authorities at Palacky University.

Testimonials

Bruce Precious
Halifax, Canada, Year - 2nd

"Palacky University Medical Faculty offers students a unique opportunity to study medicine abroad. The modern facilities provide an excellent learning environment. The program allows students to study in English and at the same time experience life in another community and culture".
Mac Goldstein
Florence, South Carolina, USA, 6th year

"The six year curriculum is an absolute advantage if you want a strong foundation in the basic sciences. There is at Palacky a low student to teacher ratio especially in the clinical rotations. Olomouc is a charming City with a quiet atmosphere that is very conducive to study".
Jihan Hai (MD)
London UK,  Doctor, graduated 2002

"Studying at Palacky University has been a very challenging experience. I feel I have matured mentally both due to studying medicine and living in a different community and culture".
Joe Purcell
Naas, Co Kildare, Eire, graduated 2003

"Students will not be disappointed by their decision to study in Olomouc. The warm close-knit community of both teachers and students could almost be described as family-like. Just like a family the people here will make your success their priority, presuming of course that your success is your own priority".
Keith Arnold
Exeter, UK, graduated 2004

"Palacky University has given me the opportunity to study medicine which due to my age was not an option open to me in the UK. I can honestly say that I am very satisfied with the program, which impresses me each year especially now that I am entering the clinical phase of the course. The Town of Olomouc is charming and the Czech Republic has many characteristics of which it should be very proud. You will enjoy your time here".
Imran Shah (MD)
London, England,  Doctor (graduated 2000)

"Since 1994 when I first arrived in Olomouc there has been numerous improvements within both the medical faculty and hospital. I wouldn't hesitate to say that studying medicine at Palacky University was a rewarding and enjoyable experience. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to study medicine".
Anthony Florschutz (MD)
