Student Life in Olomouc and the Czech Republic

Olomouc sits in the gently rolling, fertile basin of the Morava River, in central Moravia, in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. Olomouc is at the foot of the the Jeseniky Mountains, which offer skiing, hiking and camping within easy travel distance (in the winter, cross-country skiing is available after a 15-minute bus ride). The climate is mild, averaging 20 °C (70 °F) in the summer and 0 °C (32 °F) in the winter. However, temperatures may reach up to 30 °C (86 °F) and -20 °C (-4 °F) for couple days of weeks.

Many students may be unfamiliar with the Czech Republic, its amenities and life style. They soon discover that the home of Palacky University, Olomouc, provides amenities found in any other Western city of similar size. The 100 thousand inhabitants of Olomouc live in the cultural, business, and religious center of its region. Those longing for a taste of more "big-city" life, Prague, Brno, Vienna, and other European cities are within a couple hours on a train (the journey to Prague takes almost exactly 2 hours on the fat train and costs slightly over €10 one-way).

The cost of living in Olomouc is much lower than in other Western cities. Prices for individual goods and services vary, but on the whole the cost of living is about one third that of a similarly sized city in the United States. It is recommended that students budget approximately 3,500 UDS for living expenses for the academic year (ten months). This estimate does not include the price of books and other educational materials.

Public transportation throughout the Czech Republic is very highly developed and quite inexpensive. It may be easily utilized to take in the incredible wealth of history, architecture, and beautiful landscapes of the Czech nation. Public transportation (trams, buses, and trains) in Olomouc is more than sufficient to meet students' needs.

    Student Housing and Facilities

The University provides accommodation in the University halls of residence, mostly in double rooms ($130 /month). All resident buildings contain recreation areas, TV and study rooms and cooking facilities. Lunches or dinners in the student cafeteria cost arout $2.50. In Olomouc, it is easy to find a flat for rent (two rooms with a kitchen) for about $400 /month.

    University Information Resources

University students have access to books and periodicals in the State Deposit Library. The University Library has recently been reconstructed, and the Faculty has its own information center, well stocked with hundreds of foreign journals. Departments also make their own collections available for the students. The library holds an up-to-date collection of videos, slides, CDs with special relevance to medical and related areas. Over 250 student personal computers, linked in a network, give full access to e-mail, the web and medical databases: Ovid Medline, EBSCO Host, Proquest Medical Library, Science Direct, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and others.

    Sports Facilities

Students at the English Program have fitness and training centers available to them. They may also become members of university teams and make use of other university facilities, especially those at the Faculty of Physical Culture. It should be noted that athletics play an important part in student life at Palacky University. The Faculty of Physical Culture boasts extensive opportunities for recreation and competitive sports.

The University owns a large sports hall, which is available for use by all students. Students may also use municipal sports facilities, e.g. a fifty-meter swimming pool and two ice skating rinks. An excellent ski resort is located less than one hour's driving distance north of Olomouc. Olomouc also offers good opportunities for those who enjoy watching competitions. Local teams play in first league ice hockey, basketball, and football (soccer).

    Cultural Life

For a town of its size, the opportunities for social and cultural activities in Olomouc are extraordinarily rich. The architecture of Olomouc is generally acclaimed to be second only to that of Prague. As the former capital of Moravia, Olomouc claims a rich cultural environment. Olomouc hosts the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Moravian Theater, (which hosts plays, ballet, and operas), the Art Museum, and the Regional Museum. Four cinemas, several local FM radio stations, and two town newspapers serve the region. For further activities and cultural exploration, Prague, Vienna, and Krakow lie within easy travel distance.

    Student Health Insurance

Students should secure health insurance for themselves for the duration of their stay in the Czech Republic. Many students find coverage in their home countries, while other students find insure themselves through the Czech health insurance system. In either case, appropriate proof of coverage should be given to authorities at Palacky University.

Testimonials

Bruce Precious
Halifax, Canada, Year - 2nd

"Palacky University Medical Faculty offers students a unique opportunity to study medicine abroad. The modern facilities provide an excellent learning environment. The program allows students to study in English and at the same time experience life in another community and culture".
Mac Goldstein
Florence, South Carolina, USA, 6th year

"The six year curriculum is an absolute advantage if you want a strong foundation in the basic sciences. There is at Palacky a low student to teacher ratio especially in the clinical rotations. Olomouc is a charming City with a quiet atmosphere that is very conducive to study".
Jihan Hai (MD)
London UK,  Doctor, graduated 2002

"Studying at Palacky University has been a very challenging experience. I feel I have matured mentally both due to studying medicine and living in a different community and culture".
Joe Purcell
Naas, Co Kildare, Eire, graduated 2003

"Students will not be disappointed by their decision to study in Olomouc. The warm close-knit community of both teachers and students could almost be described as family-like. Just like a family the people here will make your success their priority, presuming of course that your success is your own priority".
Keith Arnold
Exeter, UK, graduated 2004

"Palacky University has given me the opportunity to study medicine which due to my age was not an option open to me in the UK. I can honestly say that I am very satisfied with the program, which impresses me each year especially now that I am entering the clinical phase of the course. The Town of Olomouc is charming and the Czech Republic has many characteristics of which it should be very proud. You will enjoy your time here".
Imran Shah (MD)
London, England,  Doctor (graduated 2000)

"Since 1994 when I first arrived in Olomouc there has been numerous improvements within both the medical faculty and hospital. I wouldn't hesitate to say that studying medicine at Palacky University was a rewarding and enjoyable experience. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to study medicine".
Anthony Florschutz (MD)
St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, (graduated 2004)

"The university has extensive resources and the Professor's and Doctor's will gladly assist you when you need any help".

Getting here

From Prague Airport - The easiest way is to take the Airport Express Bus (AE) to the Central train station ("Hlavní nádraží") and from there take a train to Olomouc. The bus ride costs about $4 (€3) and takes approx. half an hour. Trains to Olomouc leave at least every hour and are operated either by the state-owned company CD (Czech Railways) or privately run RegioJet. The journey takes between 2 and 2.5 hours and costs between $15 - $30 depending on the train and class.

From Brno Airport - The airport in Brno is served by many of the low-cost airlines (e.g. RyanAir) and is close to the highway about 40 minutes from Olomouc by car. A regular bus line is available between the airport and the Brno bus and train stations. Trains from Brno to Olomouc and not the fastest way, buses may be a faster way to travel in this case.

From Vienna Airport - The Vienna airport is about 2 hours away by car. A train runs from the airport to the Vienna Simmering train station from which buses and trains can take you to Olomouc.
